Project Accountant

Phoenix, AZ

Employment Type: Full Time Job Number: 3636616 Salary or Pay Rate: 80000/year - 85000/year

Job Description

Project Accounting is the Specialty.

If you're looking for a role where project accounting is the focus—not just another stop on a general accounting career path—this could be a great fit.

As a Senior Project Accountant, you'll serve as a key financial partner to one or more active construction project teams. You'll own the day-to-day accounting activity behind those projects, helping ensure financial information is accurate, timely, organized, and ready to support project decisions.

This is a highly collaborative role. You'll work closely with project teams, subcontractors, business unit leadership, and accounting partners, so success here requires more than technical accounting skills. You'll need to be organized, responsive, comfortable answering questions, and genuinely enjoy working with people outside of accounting.

What You'll Own
  • Manage the full cycle of subcontractor invoices, including collection, approval routing, recording, and posting.
  • Track preliminary lien notices and help resolve ongoing subcontractor compliance issues.
  • Manage project payments and compliance tracking through Textura Payment Management.
  • Reconcile and post subcontractor invoices, owner pay applications, credit card statements, and business unit overhead invoices as part of the monthly close process.
  • Proactively identify and resolve missing or outstanding items that could affect project financials.
  • Partner with Business Unit Leaders to maintain current cost forecasts and support monthly project review meetings.
  • Prepare and process accounts receivable billings.
  • Process accounts payable and ACH payments through an electronic workflow.
  • Work with the Project Accounting Supervisor, Financial Accounting, and IT teams on process improvement initiatives.
  • Use AI and automation tools to improve efficiency in routine accounting tasks while carefully reviewing and validating AI-assisted output before it is used for financial reporting or decision-making.

A role connected to the work

Your primary partners will be project teams and subcontractors, meaning you'll be closely connected to the people and activity driving the projects forward. As the project portfolio continues to grow, occasional travel to a job site may be required, including a large West Texas project once it is fully mobilized.

What You'll Bring
  • 4+ years of accounting experience with an associate degree in a related field, or a bachelor's degree with 2+ years of accounting experience.
  • At least 2 years of construction accounting experience, either with a general contractor or a subcontractor that regularly works with general contractors.
  • A clear interest in building a career specifically in project accounting.
  • Strong organization and time management skills, with the ability to manage multiple projects and competing deadlines.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Comfort working directly with project teams and subcontractors and responding to their questions.
  • An openness to using AI and new technology in your daily work. Previous experience is a plus, but a willingness to learn is essential.

Comfort working in an in-office team environment.

Additional Experience That Would Be a Plus
  • Textura Payment Management
  • CMiC
  • Construction joint venture accounting
  • Notary commission

A Culture of Caring—With Benefits That Go Beyond the Basics

The company believes taking care of its people should be part of the job—not just a slogan. The benefits package is designed around a genuine Culture of Caring, with standout perks that support your health, financial future, personal well-being, and the causes you care about.

Your Health Comes First
  • 100% employer-paid medical and dental premiums for employees
  • Three family coverage tiers available
  • Access to StrongerWork, a mental health and wellness service

Build for the Future
  • Immediate 2% employer 401(k) contribution, whether or not you contribute to the plan yourself
  • Potential annual profit-sharing bonuses

Benefits That Give Back
  • 1 day remote after the 90 day probation period
  • 40 hours of paid Volunteer Time Off (VTO) every year to support causes you care about
  • Employee rewards program with points redeemable for gift cards or charitable donations
  • Annual boot voucher program

And, of course, standard Paid Time Off (PTO) is included as well

Why this role may be a great fit

This is an opportunity for someone who knows they want to build their career in project accounting and wants a role where that specialty is central to the work. You'll have meaningful ownership of project financial activity, regular interaction with operational teams, and the opportunity to contribute to how accounting processes evolve as the project portfolio grows—all while being part of a company that invests meaningfully in its people.
